Gunman Kills Three at Fort Hood Before Shooting Himself

In a scene eerily reminiscent of the 2009 massacre, three soldiers were killed and 16 were hospitalized on Wednesday after a gunman, identified as 34 year old specialist Ivan Lopez, opened fire on base and shot himself as MP's closed in.

Officials say that Lopez, who was originally from Puerto Rico and served as a truck driver in Iraq in 2011, although he saw no combat. Department of Defense officials say that they're fairly certain Lopez had no ties to any international terror groups, but he had previously self-reported himself for an undisclosed mental health issue.

The 34-year old specialist had also served in the infantry and the Army band and had previously served in the Puerto Rico National Guard.

Lopez legally purchased the murder weapon- a 9-shot Smith & Wesson .45 semiauto- at a nearby store that also reportedly sold Nidal Hassan his gun before his November 2009 killing spree on base, murdering 13 soldiers and injuring more than 30. Lopez was carrying multiple clips and the weapon was not registered with officials on base as is required. Although Lopez was reportedly taking prescription medication and being evaluated from PTSD, there was nothing in his background that would've prevented him from legally purchasing the pistol after a background check.

Witnesses say that Lopez appeared agitated over initially being denied leave to attend his mother's funeral in Puerto Rico. Army investigators also are looking into the possibility that a verbal altercation had preceded Lopez's killing spree. Fox News Latino reports that in a Facebook update from earlier this month, Lopez claimed that he was robbed and- more ominously- he posted in Spanish "I have lost my inner peace, full of hatred. I think this time the devil will take me."

Lopez's mother passed away in November and the Army initially denied him bereavement leave before issuing him a 24 hour pass after his funeral. In October, Lopez's grandfather had also passed away in his Puerto Rican hometown of Guayanilla.

The Army has identified the fatalities as SFC Danny Ferguson of Mulberry, FL, Sgt Timothy Owens of Effingham, IL and Carlos Alberto Rodriguez of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Fort Hood Shooter Sentenced To Death

A military jury in Texas has sentenced former US Army Major Nidal Hasan to death for his role in the November 2009 Ft Hood shootings after a three week trial.

Hasan, who sat motionless as the jury president read the verdict, has said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression, never denied being the gunman. In opening statements, he acknowledged to the jury that he pulled the trigger in a crowded waiting room where troops were getting final medical checkups before deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hasan had one final chance Wednesday to give a closing argument before his case went to the jury, but he declined -- continuing an absent defense that he has used since his trial began three weeks ago.

The Army psychiatrist's behavior has only stoked suspicion that his ultimate goal is martyrdom, in the form of a death sentence that would allow him to fulfill what prosecutors have described as a "jihad duty" under his Islamic faith.

The lead prosecutor, Col. Mike Mulligan, told jurors Wednesday morning that history was full of instances of death in the name of religion. But he said it would be "wrong and unsupportive" to tie Hasan's actions to a wider cause

Hasan acted as his own defense counsel throughout the trial, and his strategy consisted solely of admitting that he was the shooter and not challenging the prosecution's claims. The Virginia-born Muslim claimed the shooting was in retaliation for what he claims is an ongoing American war against Islamic nations.

To add insult to injury, the government has classified the terrorist sympathizer Hasan's religiously motivated killing spree as "workplace violence" instead of terrorism- denying survivors and family members certain benefits and awards.

Even worse, the FBI had reportedly intercepted communications between Hasan and radical cleric Anwar Al-Alwaki in Yemen nearly a year before the attack.

Hasan first appeared on the bureau's radar in December of 2008—nearly a year before the Fort Hood massacre—when he emailed Awlaki to ask him whether serving in the US military was compatible with the Muslim faith. He also asked whether Awlaki considered those who died attacking their fellow soldiers "shaheeds," or martyrs.

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force in San Diego, which was tracking Awlaki, intercepted Hasan's December email, along with another sent in January. A search of the Pentagon's personnel database turned up a man named Nidal Hasan who was on active military duty and was listed as a "Comm Officer" at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Normally, when the FBI unearths this kind of raw intelligence, it issues an Intelligence Information Report (IIR), which is shared with law enforcement agencies and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. (This system was designed to prevent the kind of information bottlenecks that allowed the 9/11 plot to go undetected.) But the San Diego agents misinterpreted the "Comm Officer" label in Hasan's file to mean "communications officer" (in fact, it meant "commissioned officer") and believed that a person in this role might have access to IIRs. To avoid tipping him off, they skipped the report and sent a detailed memo requesting an investigation directly to the Washington, DC, Joint Terrorism Task Force, a multiagency team overseen by the FBI that investigates terrorism cases in the capital. The message noted that Hasan's "contact with [Awlaki] would be of concern if the writer is actually the individual identified above."

The file languished for nearly two months before it was assigned to an agent for the Defense Criminal Investigative Services, who was on the task force. According to a 2011 report on the Fort Hood shootings by the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, DCIS—a law enforcement agency within the Pentagon, which normally deals with fraud and cybercrime among military personnel and contractors—was ill-equipped to tackle a counterterrorism investigation.

Meanwhile, Hasan kept writing Awlaki. Between January and May 2009, he sent the radical cleric more than a dozen emails, and received two relatively benign responses. In one message, ostensibly about Palestinians firing unguided rockets into Israel, Hasan asked Awlaki whether "indiscriminately killing civilians" was acceptable. Two days later, he sent another message answering his own question: "Hamas and the Muslims hate to hurt the innocent but they have no choice if their going to have a chance to survive, flourish, and deter the zionist enemy. The recompense for an evil is an evil." (Hasan's emails contained a number of typos.)

The San Diego field office intercepted these missives, too. But the database where the FBI stored intercepted emails didn't automatically link messages from the same sender, so the staff didn't realize that Hasan's early 2009 emails were from the person who had set off alarms the previous December. Meanwhile, the Washington-based DCIS agent assigned to investigate Hasan put off his inquiry for another 90 days, the maximum allowed under joint task force rules, before conducting a cursory investigation. Over the course of four hours on May 27, 2009, he ran Hasan's name through several databases to see if the psychiatrist had been targeted in previous counterterrorism probes. He also reviewed Hasan's Pentagon personnel file. Hasan's officer evaluations were mostly positive, and the chair of psychiatry at Walter Reed had written that Hasan's research on Islamic beliefs regarding military service had "extraordinary potential to inform national policy and military strategy."


The Senate investigation later found these reports "bore no resemblance to the real Hasan, a barely competent psychiatrist whose radicalization toward violent Islamist extremism alarmed his colleagues and his superiors." Nevertheless, the DCIS investigator concluded, based on Hasan's file, that the Army psychiatrist had contacted Awlaki in connection with his academic research and "was not involved in terrorist activity." The DCIS investigator and a supervisory agent in the Washington field office debated interviewing Hasan or his superiors. They ultimately decided doing so could jeopardize the Awlaki investigation or harm Hasan's career.

Advocates for Fort Hood victims find this decision puzzling. "A US Army major is writing to this imam and essentially asking for religious sanction to kill American soldiers," said attorney Reed Rubinstein, who represents a group of victims who are suing the federal government. "And the FBI's Washington field office doesn't even interview the man or make a phone call to his superiors. It's utterly incomprehensible."

Hasan's superiors reportedly missed or ignored a number of red flags regarding Hasan's performance as an officer, including being overweight and stridently supporting Islamic law during his residency at Walter Reed Army hospital.

Should the Army follow through, this will be the first military execution since 1961.

US Born Al Qaeda Cleric Killed in Arabian Peninsula Drone Airstrike

The good news is that you still get your virgins, Anwar. The bad news is that all 72 of them look like Michael Moore.

Anwar al-Awlaki, Al Qaeda's internet savvy, New Mexico-born propagaindist was killed in Yemen on Friday when what's believed to be a CIA drone fired a missile on a convoy.

Fluent in English, al-Awlaki is said to have inspired numerous attacks against American and Western targets, including the failed Christmas 2009 underwear bomber over Detroit, an October 2010 plot to bring down aircraft using explosive parcels. The Islamic cleric is said to have corresponded via e-mail with Nidal Hasan prior to his November 2009 Fort Hood murder spree and Faisal Shahzad's botched May 2010 attempt to set off a car bomb in New York City's Times Square.

Also in may 2010, a 21 year old unemployed woman named Roshonara Choudharay who said she was inspired by al-Awlaki's online sermons and articles stabbed Labour MP Stephen Timms at the Beckton Globe library.

Beginning in 2000, al-Awlaki preached in a San Diego area mosque where he met two parishoners who were later identified as Khalid al-Midar and Nawaf al-Hamzi- two of the 9/11 hijackers. The following year, al-Awlaki moved to northern Virginia before heading back to Yemen by way of London in 2002. From Yemen's tribal controlled hinterlands, al-Awlaki delivered sermons and oversaw recruitment for Al Qaeda on the Arabian Peninusla, escaping a similar attempt on his life in May of this year.

AWOL Soldier Arrested With Bombmaking Materiels and Ammuntion in Texas, Confesses to Plotting 2nd Ft. Hood Attack

Police in Killeen, TX arrested a 21 year old Army private who went AWOL from Ft. Campbell, KY earlier this month and was reportedly plotting to carry out an attack on Ft. Hood similar to Nidal Hasan's November 2009 shooting spree.

An AWOL infantry soldier caught with weapons and a bomb inside a backpack admitted planning what would have been Fort Hood's second terrorist attack in less than two years, the Army said Thursday. He might have succeeded at carrying it out, police said, if a gun-store clerk hadn't alerted them to the man's suspicious activity.

The 21-year-old suspect, Pfc. Naser Abdo, was arrested Wednesday at a motel about three miles from Fort Hood's main gate. He had spoken out against the 2009 Fort Hood shootings last year as he made a public plea to be granted conscientious objector status to avoid serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Like the soldier charged with killing 13 people in the shootings, Abdo is Muslim, but he said in an essay obtained by The Associated Press the attacks ran against his beliefs and were "an act of aggression by a man and not by Islam."

Abdo was approved as a conscientious objector this year, but that status was put on hold after he was charged with possessing child pornography. He went absent without leave from Fort Campbell, Ky., during the July 4 weekend.

On July 3, he tried to purchase a gun at a store near the Kentucky post, according to the company that owns the store. Abdo told an AP reporter a week later that he was concerned about his safety and had considered purchasing a gun for protection, but had not yet done so.

Police in Killeen said their break in the case came from Guns Galore LLC — the same gun store where Maj. Nidal Hasan bought a pistol used in the 2009 attack. Store clerk Greg Ebert said the man arrived by taxi Tuesday and bought 6 pounds of smokeless gunpowder, three boxes of shotgun ammunition and a magazine for a semi-automatic pistol.

Ebert said he called authorities because he and his co-workers "felt uncomfortable with his overall demeanor and the fact he didn't know what the hell he was buying."

According to an Army alert sent via email and obtained by The Associated Press, Killeen police learned from the taxi company that Abdo had been picked up from a local motel and had also visited an Army surplus store where he paid cash for a uniform bearing Fort Hood unit patches.

Agents found firearms and "items that could be identified as bomb-making components, including gunpowder," in Abdo's motel room, FBI spokesman Erik Vasys said.

The Army alert said Abdo "was in possession of a large quantity of ammunition, weapons and a bomb inside a backpack," and upon questioning admitted planning an attack on Fort Hood. Officials have not offered details about a possible motive.

Baldwin, the police chief, said Abdo "was taken down rather quickly without incident."

Vasys said the FBI would charge Abdo with possessing bomb-making components and he would be transferred from Killeen police into federal custody. Vasys said there was nothing to indicate Abdo was working with others.

Abdo had gained a number of progressive admirers thanks to his opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and his applying for Conscientious Objector status with the Army last year. The 21 year old PFC grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of Garland and was most recently stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY.

Although his request to become a Conscientious Objector (CO) was ultimately approved by the US Army, he was arrested in May of this year for having images of child pornography on his computer. A hearing held under Article 32 of the UCMJ recommended that he be court-martialed from the Army on those charges- Abdo went AWOL shortly after the hearing.

Fort Hood- 1 Year Later

Today marks the 1-year anniversary of the massacre at Fort Hood, TX where Maj. Nidal Hasan shot and killed 12 unarmed soldiers preparing for deployment to Afghanistan and a civilian Department of Defense worker and wounded 32 others.

Hassan was cut down after exchanging fire with civilian police officer Mark Todd [I had incorrectly identified officer Kimberly Munley as the one who stopped Hassan's rampage- NANESB!]. Hasan survived, but was paralyzed from the waist down and has been in custody ever since.

At first blush, the background behind the Major's shooting spree isn't that dissimilar to other, infamous workplace shootings that have taken place. And this has allowed many so-called journalists and writers to circumvent the obvious by overlooking significant details like Hasan's e-mail correspondence with fugitive Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader Anwar al-Awlaki or shouting 'Allahu Akhbar' while embarking his killing spree.

And that denial seems to be one of the more disturbing legacies of the shooting on this somber 1 year anniversary. Esquire tells us about the granular earthen materiel they're seeing in amazing detail with jaw-dropping, head-in-the-sand statements such as:

But the real story at Fort Hood was never terrorism

Really? How does one respond to an almost proud display of ignorance on that author's part?

I guess one could flail around desperately trying to find other possible motivations behind the shooting aside from the most glaringly obvious and self-explanatory one. In the immediate wake of the shooting, the media had no idea how many shooters there were, whether or not they were soldiers and where they came from. But in those same vague, urgent reports they let us know that despite the lack of information available from Ft. Hood at the moment, they could reassure us it wasn't terrorism.

Then the spin-meisters went to work with a cornucopia of excuses- it was post traumatic stress disorder; despite Hasan never serving in a combat area. It was a victim of racial/religious discrimination lashing out; despite the ethnic plurality of the victims he gunned down and the fact that his time at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. was marked with more red flags than a Chinese military parade.

Hasan's Article 32 Hearing began last month and Army prosecutors rested their case against Hasan two weeks ago. The defense had been considering an attempt to use the insanity defense, but experts say that's easily undermined by the weeks of preparation Hasan underwent prior to the shooting spree.

Since the shooting, Al-Alwaki and Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are thought to have been behind the failed Christmas day underpants bombing of Northwest Airlines Flight 253 and last week's attempt to send explosive parcels through airfreight- both of which used PETN explosives.

Meanwhile, the soldiers from the 20th Engineer Battalion and 467th Medical Detachment (the units being outprocessed to Afghanistan) are now coming home from their rotation in Afghanistan.

The 5ft 2 in mother of two and civilian police sargeant is recovering from wounds sustained when she exchanged gunfire with Hasan during his murder spree.

Newton, MA residents recall Munley from when she was waiting tables at an Elliot St. pub a few years ago.

“She really didn’t have a lot of fear,” said Dunn-Gaherin’s Food & Spirits owner Seana Gaherin, who was Kimberly Munley’s boss from 2003-2005, when the young cop did a stint as a waitress at the Newton pub on Eliot Street.

“We’re so proud of her. We’re just happy that she’s OK,” Gaherin told the Herald yesterday

Back then, she was Kimberly Barbour and she dreamed of returning to law enforcement, Gaherin said. She even took the Boston police exam, according to Gaherin.

The waitress was known for being tough. One Halloween, she dressed as Demi Moore’s character in the movie “G.I. Jane,” and she played shortstop on the bar’s softball team.

Gaherin said the bar has been flooded with calls from people who recognized Munley as their former waitress who spent her breaks reading the Boston Herald.

“We want to host a big party and bring her back. We know she touched a lot of lives,” Gaherin said. “She was just a nice spirit.”

This Just In: Chicago's Mayor Daley is a Tool

But that's probably not news to some of you in Chicagoland.

Never mind the confirmed attempts to contact extremist muslim preachers and never mind the PTSD cooties narrative the mainstream media's been trying to sell us. Chicago's Croney Prince Daley insists that guns are to blame in Malik Nidal Hasan's murder spree at Fort Hood last week.

“Everyday in society,” Daley said, “somebody is being killed. Unfortunately, America loves guns. We love guns to a point where that, uh, we see devastation on a daily basis. You don’t blame a group. You don’t blame a society, an immigrant community because of actions of one group...one individual. You cannot say that.”

You'd think that the mayor of one of America's largest metropolitan areas could at least pretend to give a damn about the soldiers killed and wounded in Hasan's spree. Or at least get his facts straight and understand that Hasan wasn't an immigrant.

But damn, the dude's got a point- while we're at it Daley might as well ban railroad ties effective immediately. We've seen that those can be pretty devestating in the wrong hands as well.

If we follow Daley's idiocy to it's logical conclusion, I suppose that means he's advocating the following:

1) Active duty military personnel cannot purchase firearms
2) United States Military installations should be 'gun free zones'
3) Muslims in America should not be able to legally purchase firearms

If stricter gun control laws are put in place, then I'm sure the whole Killeen/Waco/Ft. Hood area will become the glistening 100% crime free oasis that Chicago is to this day!

"We don't know all the answers yet. And I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts," Obama said in a Rose Garden statement otherwise devoted to the economy.


Hmm....What a difference a couple of months makes, eh? I guess there's a lesson to be learned in all of this.

Jumping to conclusions when a muslim officer in the United States Army murders 13 of his unarmed fellow soldiers and wounds 31 more on an army base is wrong.

But there's nothing wrong with jumping to conclusions about a whole police department after an officer arrests one of your race-baiting academic buddies.

Do I have that about right?

Additional Thoughts on the Ft. Hood Shootings and Aftermath

To be perfectly honest, it didn't really enter my mind that the Fort Hood shooter was mulsim until I heard a radio update where the announcer adamantly declared 'officials say this is not a terrorist incident'. Keep in mind this was while the exact number of shooters was unknown, the number of dead and wounded were unknown, whether or not the shooter was in custody was unknown at the time- yet somehow the media and various spokespeople magically knew with 100% certainty that this was not a terrorist attack [and those of you keeping score at home should not forget that!].

And of coure, once Maj Hasan's identity was disclosed a couple of the networks went with the PTSD angle, despite the fact that Hasan hadn't been previously deployed to combat- mostly the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Fort Hood. So the 'P' in PTSD magically became Pre-Traumatic Stress Disorder because he was so upset over his upcoming deployment. Just humoring these idiots for a few moments means that we have to completely overlook the ginormous pachyderm inhabiting the same room that is Hasan's ethnic and religious background, to say nothing of the red flags he was apparently setting off at the Walter Reed Medical Center.

Then there was President Obama's address to the nation in the immediate aftermath, which wasn't as bad as I thought- it was much worse. Look- I can't stand the man or 99% of his policies, but I was hoping he would apply some of that charm and eloquence that CNN and MSNBC assures us he possesses to use reassuring an uncertain nation and comforting the families of the murdered. Instead, I was treated to stammering platitudes read off of a teleprompter by somebody who sounded like they were starting to realize they were in over their head- cripes, why not crack open a copy of My Pet Goat while you're at it? I didn't even know about the informal shout-outs to the BIA's Tribal Nations Conference until I read the linked article (the Chicago NBC affiliate- hardly a right-wing mouthpiece). I'm not pointing this for the sake of being vindictive and petty, I'm pointing this out because the man screwed the pooch. Honestly, I was hoping he'd rise to occasion on some level.

But hey- let's not jump to conclusions! Just because the shooter was muslim, spoke approvingly of muslims killing American soldiers and civilians, listed his nationality as 'Palestinian' on an Islamic matrimonial website (even though he was born and raised in Virginia), don't you dare jump to the hasty and uninformed conclusion that his religious background might've had something to do with it. Not when the mainstream media is trying so desperately to spin this massacre as a byproduct of PTSD and leave Hasan relatively blameless in this bloodbath.

12 Dead, 31 wounded in Fort Hood Rampage- 39 Year Old Major In Custody

FORT HOOD — A military mental health doctor facing deployment overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, setting off on a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded. The violence was believed to be the worst mass shooting in history at a U.S. military base.

The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive and in stable condition under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Robert Cone at Fort Hood.

“I would say his death is not imminent,” Cone said.

The man was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old, eight-year veteran from Virginia. Col. Ben Danner said the suspect was shot at least four times.

The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., when shots were fired at the base’s Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, Cone said.

This is sad and disturbing on a couple of different levels. First of all, someone awarded the rank of Major in the United States Army took it upon himself to gun down scores of his fellow soldiers today- apparently people he knew personally. This was not some homesick 'Private Pyle' E-2 who just got a Dear John letter from his sweetie and snapped. This was a doctor who was promoted to the rank of Major, not the semiliterate hillbilly or inner-city gangbanger duped by nefarious recruiters that populates the US-Army-According-To-Code-Pink narrative.

Then there's the assertion in the mainstream press that Hasan snapped because he was getting ready to be deployed. Technically true, but that's overlooking one mighty big pachyderm that happens to be in the same room. According to some of his colleagues at the Walter Reed Army Hospital, Hasan gave tacit approval to insurgent and terrorist attacks on American soldiers during arguments while working there. Think about that for a moment- he was in effect giving the thumbs-up to the terrorists and insurgents who were killing and maiming the very soldiers he was supposed to be helping! And kindly refrain from bludgeoning me with that 'You're-saying-Muslims-shouldn't-serve-in-the-military!' strawman. I'm saying that somebody who so readily wanted to see his own country defeated in Iraq and Afghanistan should at least get some closer scrutiny when he took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States like the 12 people he murdered today.

Then there's the physical layout of Ft. Hood itself. I've never been there myself, but if I understand correctly there are no gates or sentries on the roads in and out of the base like a couple of the major Army bases in Georgia (Ft. Benning and Ft. Hood Spring to mind right away). Instead, the respective bases are patrolled by MPs or security guards. Enough major highways cross directly through the base to make putting permanent gates and sentries up an impractical proposition. I suppose some MP's posted at the entrances and stringing up some concertina wire would be a temporary solution during periods of high alert, but basically there would be nothing preventing a determined terrorist from driving onto some military bases with a truck bomb or suicide vest and detonating it once they approach a crowded area [I'm not doing this to give Al Qaeda or Hezbollah any ideas- those vermin may be execrable subhumans, but they're not all stupid either].

Also keep in mind that most military personnel are unarmed while on base- except for the MPs. Typically, the only time soldiers, sailors, marines or airmen are in possession of firearms and live ammunition is when they're on the firing ranges. This came up a few years ago when certain commentators on the left dismissed a plot to attack Fort Dix in New Jersey with pistols, RPGs and automatic rifles as bogus. Their rationale? Machine-gun wielding and tank-driving GI's would've cut the wanna-be jihadis down the second they showed themselves [which demonstrates their ignorance about life in the military]. Had the Fort Dix attack been carried out, the only people who would've been able to shoot back would've been the MPs- likely armed with 9mm pistols- as the weapons are stored in armories at their respective companies when not out on the range.

I'm not sure what else I can add to this- the information that was coming out of Ft. Hood and Killeen, TX earlier today was fast and furious and contradictory (first it was multiple gunmen, then just the one; Hasan and the civilian police officer that shot him were both dead, now it appears they were both alive, etc etc). My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those killed Thursday and I'm hoping for a speedy recovery for the 31 wounded.

As for Hasan, all I can say is make him sorry he survived.
